Breaking out? Here are my top 3 tips to help reduce your breakout.
Getting a big, red, painful breakout always seems to happen at the most inconvenient time. Although when is it a convenient time to breakout? I’ve struggled with my skin since middle school, so I’ve picked up a few tips and tricks along the way. and I’ll tell you right now, putting toothpaste on your pimple will not make it go away.
The first thing I would do when I notice a breakout is wash my face with a gentle Cleanser. I love the Face Reality Ultra Gentle Cleanser or their Barrier Balance Cream Cleanser (for dry skin). I’ve also been loving the Ourself Purifying Cleanser and The Dermathod Moist morning touch foam cleanser.
Next I would ice my breakout. All you need is an ice cube and a paper towel. But if you want to romanticize your breakout routine I’ll link the cold globes that I use in my treatment room. Wrap your ice cube in the paper towel where your fingers will be, and in small circular motions place it on your break out and even the surrounding areas. I find this to be very refreshing. Do this for about 1-2 minutes and DO NOT hold the ice cube in one spot! If the cold therapy is burning or hurting stop. Icing helps reduce redness, inflammation and pain associated with breakouts.
Glymed+ Mattifying Sulfur Masque
My favorite spot treatment for breakouts.
After icing I use the Glymed+ Mattifying Sulfur Masque to spot treat my breakout. You can also use as a mask all over the face too! Sulfur helps reduce inflammation and kill bacteria associated with breakouts. The Glymed+ Mattifying Sulfur Masque has been the best spot treatment that I have found for my acne prone skin. With 10 % sulfur, bentonite & kaolin Clay and Glycerin, this mask is great for oily, acne prone, and rosacea- prone skin. You can leave the spot treatment, or mask, on for about 10 minutes. But I like to leave the spot treatment on overnight or just when I’m out and about.
My last tip for when you are experiencing a breakout is…
Don’t Pick at it. Shocker. I’m sure you’ve heard this from any skincare professional. Picking and popping can lead to increased scarring, risk of spreading bacteria and often times leaves the skin looking worse. I understand that skin picking can be a psychological response. I’ve been researching habits and specifically how to break habits. In my Acne Program all my clients will leave with a Document on breaking the habit of skin picking. This acts as a guide to notice the habit, and formulate tools on how to resist and reduce the urge to pick at your skin. I also include a list of skin affirmations that I believe build a foundation of skin love.
So next time you get a big, red, painful breakout, take a deep breath and follow these three tips for happy healthy skin!
